The principle of operation of the turbocharger
The first turbocharger was patented at the very beginning of the 20th century, in 1905, but only a few decades later this invention became widely used in truck engines. Since the 1970s, passenger car manufacturers have gradually introduced more and more models equipped with turbochargers into their offer - more and more drivers also decide to install this device later in operation. What is a turbocharger for and how does it work?Turbocharger Tasks
The engine's power is very closely related to several of its parameters - the size (and therefore weight) and the efficiency with which it burns the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder chambers. It is easy to see that the larger the engine, the more power it has, powerful truck engines are able to withstand much greater loads than engines of small passenger cars. However, a proportional increase in power relative to the size of the engine occurs only up to a certain point — above it, a gradual decrease in power is visible, the engine itself simply becomes too heavy. A turbocharger is a device that allows you to significantly increase the power of an engine without having to increase its size.
How does a turbocharger work?
The operation of the engine is based, as mentioned above, on the combustion of certain doses of fuel in the cylinder chambers – to carry out this process, it is necessary to have access to an appropriate amount of oxygen. Too little oxygen in the cylinders will not allow the fuel to burn properly, and despite its influx to the cylinder, the increase in engine power will be small. Therefore, more air should flow into the cylinders — this is exactly what the turbocharger does. It consists of two main components, which gave it its name, namely a turbine and a compressor. These elements are interconnected by a shaft. The turbine (also known as the hot side) is driven by exhaust gases, which in turn causes the compressor (also known as the cold side) to rotate, pumping more air into the intake system. The increased amount of oxygen allows the fuel to be burned more efficiently, and thus the engine increases its power.
